Delicate metalwork and angular rimless lenses give these vintage American Optical spectacles their distinctive Art Deco character. An engraved bridge, high-mounted temple connections, and curved cable-style arms create a light, architectural silhouette.

The accompanying brown hard case has a deep green lining and gold lettering reading “A. Scott Gibson, O.D., Thomaston, GA.” A printed cleaning cloth is also included, according to The Marian Collection's inventory assessment. Together they make an evocative addition to an eyewear collection, desk vignette, or historical display.

Maker, Marks & Era

  • Maker: attributed to American Optical from the AO hallmark reported in the supplied inspection
  • Material marking: reported as “1/10 12K GF”; offered as marked gold-filled metal, not solid gold
  • Era: attributed to circa 1930s–1940s
  • Design: rimless, angular/octagonal-cut lenses, decorative bridge, and cable temples
  • Model: Numont / Ful-Vue identification is suggested by the supplied research but has not been independently confirmed
  • Case inscription: A. Scott Gibson, O.D., Thomaston, GA
  • The case inscription identifies the dispensing practice; the case and cloth have not been independently documented as original to these particular frames
  • Includes one pair of spectacles, one hard case, and the accompanying printed cloth. Cloth fiber and treatment are unconfirmed.

Condition & Intended Use

Good vintage presentation with age-related wear. The metal retains a warm gold tone, with patina and surface wear visible in the photographs. Lenses appear intact in the supplied views; fine scratches and optical condition have not been professionally assessed. Nose pads show amber coloration. The case and cloth show age-related wear.

Sold as collectible vintage eyewear, not as ready-to-wear prescription glasses. Existing lens prescription, optical suitability, frame fit, and readiness for daily wear are unknown. Have a qualified optician assess the frames and lenses before any use for vision correction. No UV protection, safety-eyewear rating, or prescription compatibility is claimed.

Styling Notes

Display the open case on a writing desk beside favorite books, or incorporate the spectacles into a shadowbox or optical-history collection. For theatre or film use, have the fit and lenses assessed before wearing.

Care

Handle gently with both hands, supporting the bridge and lens mounts. Avoid bending the cable temples or tightening screws without appropriate expertise. Do not polish abrasively or soak the frames. Ask an optician about suitable cleaning for the lenses and aged mounts; keep the case and historical cloth dry.

Shipping & Handling

The spectacles will be gently cushioned inside the hard case without pressure on the lenses or bridge. The case and accompanying cloth will be protected and packed in a sturdy shipping box. Ships from our studio within 1–3 business days.
