A quietly iconic piece of American studio pottery — California-made, backstamped, and built to last a century.

This authentic mid-century leaf dish was produced by Franciscan Earthenware (Gladding, McBean & Co.) in California and bears the original black circular backstamp “FRANCISCAN MADE IN CALIFORNIA U.S.A.” on its underside. The form is unmistakably mid-century: an elongated oval leaf body with scalloped ridged ribbing and a dramatic scrolled stem handle at one end — a silhouette that reads equally at home in a Hollywood Regency vignette or a moody dark academia shelf.

The deep burgundy / oxblood crimson glaze is rich and high-gloss, catching light beautifully across the sculptural ridges. Stilt marks on the unglazed foot ring are normal production characteristics of mid-century kiln firing and consistent with authentic hand-crafted earthenware manufacture.

A Note on Franciscan Ware

The brand became one of the most recognized names in American art pottery and tableware, celebrated for its hand-crafted quality, distinctive glazes, and sculptural forms.
